gPIMS

Guided Ultrasonics Ltd (GUL) has developed a permanently installed monitoring system, gPIMS®, and associated software tools to offer a fully comprehensive monitoring solution. This includes:

• The gPIMS® sensor, a pre-moulded environmentally sealed array of sensor elements that is bonded to pipe.
• The connection box, installed in an easily accessible location that can be up to 50m from the sensor position.
• The Wavemaker G4 Mini Collector instrument for data collection
• Data comparison tools built in to the WavePro™ software, allowing signal traces to be compared with each other in order to detect and track changes that have occurred to the pipe condition.

In many situations, the cost of accessing a pipe is much higher than the cost of inspection.
This cost can make continuous inspections with removable rings prohibitively expensive.
The environmentally robust gPIMS® range of sensors has been developed to be easily bonded to the pipe, sealed and then left in place.
A cable connects the gPIMS® sensor to a connection box that can be located in a convenient, easy to access location.

By performing repeat inspections and comparing the results to previous inspections, operators can monitor for any change in the condition of the pipe.
Frequent data collection significantly improves sensitivity and reduces false call rates compared to conventional guided wave testing.

The benefits of guided wave testing (GWT) can be magnified if multiple collections from the same sensor at the same position can be compared and analysed together.
This allows:

  • The state of the structure to be regularly monitored for changes in a semi-automated way
  • More accurate separation of environmental effects (for example areas of frozen insulation) from real defects
  • Collections to be performed by less trained personnel (only requiring a fully qualified inspector when the sensor is first installed)

In addition to the safety implications of site access, the nominal access costs to the pipe can often account for a large fraction of the inspection cost, so recurrent testing for monitoring pipe condition can therefore be costly and carry risks.

gPIMS® is a GWT sensor that is permanently mounted to the pipe. It offers an excellent solution to recurrent inspections where access to the test point is only required once. Further access cost for inspections is considerably reduced or completely eliminated.
With the help of the data comparison module in the WavePro™ software, the monitoring data enables accurate tracking and trending of defects.

Technical Data

The following is Technical Data and Case study of Monitoring System – gPIMS®

Case Study

gPIMS® is used to monitor the object GWT permanently and is mounted to the pipe which is hard to access because of risk of hazard for engineer. Usually gPIMS® is mounted permanently, the following object is example. Please contact us if you would like to monitor the object permanently.
