Voliro T

We are proud to present the Voliro T, Voliro’s flying robot. The Voliro T can be equipped with a variety of Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) sensors, depending on the use-case. The payload sensor possibilities are limitless. The Voliro T is capable of Ultrasonic Testing (UT) for thickness measurement, Dry-Film Thickness (DFT) measurement and much more. Thanks to the integration of various assistive technologies and safety-systems, the Voliro T is safe and easy to fly in close proximity to structures. The unique 360 degrees drone design of the platform allows inspection of curved and sloped surfaces. No other flying inspection robot boasts these capabilities. (Patents pending.)

The Voliro T is safe and easy to fly thanks to advanced assistive technology relying on a host of onboard sensors. The Voliro T is intended for use in a two-person inspection workflow, allowing the pilot and inspector to work together seamlessly. While the pilot focuses on flying the robot, the inspector can concentrate on the measurement data.

Safe and Reliable by Design

Based on a unique 360 degrees design, the Voliro T is capable of hovering at any given orientation and exerting precise forces on the structure. This allows for stable contact and reliable measurements at predetermined locations, even on curved and tilted surfaces.
Tiltable rotor design makes the Voliro T resistant to wind gusts and turbulence close to the structure.

Easy-to-fly Close to Structure

The Voliro T relies on advanced perception systems to stabilize itself in GPS-denied areas close to structures. A real-time video stream from an onboard FPV camera helps to create an intuitive flying experience and provides the pilot with the necessary awareness of the flying robot’s surroundings.

The Voliro T comes with several assistive systems that allow it to:

・Sense and avoid obstacles around it
・Lock itself to a surface of any orientation
・Perform a controlled approach and maintain stable contact to inspect the surface

High-Quality Inspection Data

The Voliro T can be configured to have various Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) sensor payloads. Once the pilot guides the flying robot to place the NDT sensor in contact with the surface, the inspector can view real-time measurement data via a tablet interface and store the measurements for review at a later time.

Some of the possible NDT use-cases with the Voliro T are:

・Ultrasonic Testing (UT) for flaw detection or thickness measurements of metals and composites
・A cutting-edge Electro Magnetic Acoustic Transducer (EMAT) for couplant-free thickness measurements of metallic surfaces that requires no surface preparation
・Precise coating thickness measurements with a Dry-Film Thickness (DFT) gauge

Case Study

Voliro T equipped with different sensors can be used for a broad range of applications. Moreover, this smart inspection tool reduces costs and significantly increases the safety of inspection missions.

Industrial Inspection

The Voliro T is a flying robotic system that can be equipped with either a UT sensor or an EMAT sensor. These can be used for contact based corrosion inspection of storage tanks, pipes and other infrastructure.

Vessel Inspection

Using the Voliro T for vessel inspection will reduce the downtime of the vessel significantly and allow the asset owner to collect more data and information about the status quo of its asset.

Grid Network Inspection

Today, Voliro T is used to perform DFT and EMAT inspections on high-voltage pylons in Switzerland in order to improve asset integrity and reduce the inspection costs.

Wind Turbine Inspection

Voliro is developing an efficient solution to inspect the Lightning Protection Systems (LPS) of wind turbines without the need for rope climbers. This will reduce the inspection costs significantly.
